Residents of the small community of Sutton, nestled between the City of Palmer and the Chickaloon, are speaking in opposition to a proposed move by the Department of Public Safety that would extend Chickaloon Tribal Police officers authority to enforce limited misdemeanor and felony crimes.

SUTTON , Alaska - where department communications director, Austin McDaniel, held a public forum with Capt. Andrew Gorn, the Alaska State Trooper B Detachment Commander.

While it does not grant officers the authority to conduct traffic stops, Community Council Member and nine-year Sutton resident Garret Nelson said the relationship between Sutton and Chickaloon has long been out of sync. “The community will not support giving law enforcement authority to someone who views us as secondary citizens with no appeal to the state or the U.S. Constitution,” Nelson said.

In an interview on Tuesday, McDaniel said it’s common practice for sheriff and county law enforcement to work with tribal police in the Lower 48 and that the state currently has nearly 250 active special commissions. According to an FAQ sheet provided by DPS, persons arrested for a crime within the jurisdictional area “will be referred to the Palmer District Attorney’s Office for prosecution” and Alaska State Troopers will continue to serve as the primary law enforcement agency for the area.
