Annabel Sutherland’s remarkable first Test century was the bulwark of a total that gave Alyssa Healy’s side prime position after two days of the women’s Ashes

With a gorgeous flick through the legside, Annabel Sutherland notched a remarkable first Test century at Trent Bridge, the bulwark of a total that gave Alyssa Healy’s side prime position after two days of the women’s Ashes.

Plenty of history was created in Sutherland’s performance. Hers was the highest ever score by a No. 8 in women’s Tests, the fastest Test century by an Australian at 148 balls, and also made her the youngest centurion for Australia since Belinda Clark in 1991. Sutherland’s name will now grace the Trent Bridge Honour board, joining the likes of Bradman, Richards, Lara and Kohli.

England’s captain Heather Knight was snaffled neatly by Healy when Ash Gardner found a little extra bounce with her off-spin, ending a century stand with the proactive Tammy Beaumont. Nat Sciver-Brunt and Beaumont, who strode to her own first Test hundred with the sort of snappy strokeplay that has made her a stalwart for England in white ball cricket, took advantage of some loose stuff from King and Gardner in the closing overs to take England to stumps at 2-218, still 255 in arrears.
