County Probation Department officials said authorities responded to a “suspected overdose” and “possible exposure” to an unidentified substance with video from the scene showing at least one person being loaded into an ambulance, and others being evaluated at the facility.Narcan was administered before emergency personnel arrived, according to the Los Angeles County Probation Department. Seven people were taken to a local hospital for evaluation. Six staff members and one minor are described as being in stable condition, with the majority of the individuals expected to be discharged on Wednesday. "Today's incident at Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall is deeply concerning,” Kathryn Barger, the chair of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors said in a statement, adding she was trying to get accurate information from the Probation Department. “It is essential that we understand exactly what happened so we can ensure the safety and well-being of both the youth in our care and the dedicated staff who serve them."The situation unfolded just two days after a nonprofit organization worker was arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle drugs into the juvenile facility, which has been plagued with operational issues since it reopened in 2023. Alejandro Lopez, who worked for the nonprofit Student Nest, an educational tutoring service, was arrested at the facility Monday when authorities said he was engaged in some suspicious activity. “My understanding is that youth in our care, Probation staff, and medical staff were all possibly exposed to and sickened by a toxic drug that should never have been able to enter this facility,” Janice Hahn, a member of the LA County Board of Supervisor said. Downey Fire Department and Police Department were also at the scene assisting the department officials while the facility was placed on lockdown during the investigation. The facility has come under fire repeatedly since it was reopened in 2023 as it has been deemed unsuitable on multiple occasions by state regulators, and it continues to operate under an unsuitability declaration.to draw down the number of youth housed at the facility, which has been plagued with issues stemming mostly from short-staffing, along with concerns about detainees not being transported to classes or medical appointments.
