A suspected DUI driver was arrested Wednesday evening after crashing head-on into a Pierce County Sheriff’s Office patrol car.

According to the sheriff’s office, a traffic deputy was driving in the two-way left turn lane, preparing to turn onto 31st Avenue Court East, when a pickup truck traveling in the opposite direction veered into the lane and struck the patrol car. The driver of the pickup told investigators he braked to avoid another vehicle ahead of him, causing him to swerve into the center turn lane where the deputy was waiting. The airbags deployed in the patrol vehicle, but neither driver was injured, the PCSO said. A traffic deputy with the PCSO investigated the crash, while Washington State Patrol assisted and arrested the pickup driver for suspected DUI after collecting substantial evidence, the PCSO confirmed.
