The man who was arrested after a string of fires left historically black churches gravely burned is now facing hate crime charges.
Matthews, the 21-year-old son of a sheriff's deputy, appeared in court in Opelousas on Monday. He entered a not guilty plea via his court-appointed lawyer. Matthews was denied bond on Monday, which law enforcement officials pushed for because they view him as a continued threat. Black metal, a distant genre of devil-worshipping death metal music, has roots in the Norwegian heavy metal scene that reportedly was the inspiration for several church burnings in the country in the early 1990s.
