A suffering elderly dog who was unable to move was humanely euthanized after being abandoned outside the Ashtabula County Animal Protective League overnight. Now the sheriff's office has identified a suspect.

ASHTABULA COUNTY , Ohio - A suffering elderly dog who was unable to move was humanely euthanized after being abandoned outside the Ashtabula County Animal Protective League overnight. After asking for the community’s help, the sheriff’s office may have their answer.

ACAPL said a gold minivan pulled into their parking lot around 8 p.m. on Saturday night and dumped the senior dog, who could not move, and drove away. “Because we do not have overnight staff, this poor dog spent the entire night outside, barely moving and fighting for her life,” ACAPL stated.“Staff immediately brought her inside and did everything possible to get her warm, safe, and comfortable. Our veterinarian graciously came all the way out to our facility to examine her and run tests to see if there was any possible way to save her. Sadly, her condition was far too severe. The kindest and most humane thing we could do was end her suffering through euthanasia.Unfortunately, ACAPL’s cameras did not capture to the minivan’s license plate. So the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Office asked for the community’s help figuring out who this van, and this dog, belonged to.On Thursday, ACAPL announced the sheriff’s office identified a suspect. “This case is still under investigation and we cannot release any other information or photos at this time but we full of hope and gratitude thanks to your help and support!” ACAPL.“If you have information, no matter how small it may seem, please come forward,” ACAPL pleaded. “This dog deserved compassion, dignity, and care in her final moments—and we intend to do everything we can to find the person responsible."As of the beginning of 2026, we are accepting dogs via owner surrender, but we operate under a controlled intake model. Because we do not euthanize for space or length of stay, we can only take in the number of dogs we can responsibly house and care for. Owners who need to surrender a dog can fill out the owner surrender application on our website, and when space becomes available we contact them. If someone does not have internet access, they can always call us and we will do our best to help. If a pet is experiencing urgent medical distress, the best option is to contact a veterinarian or emergency veterinary clinic right away. We are not an emergency clinic, but owners can contact us during our business hours and we will help however we can. We have helped many pet owners whose animals are suffering and who cannot afford veterinary euthanasia, and we always do our best to assist when people reach out. Regarding whether someone should contact the dog warden or sheriff’s office, that can depend on the situation and jurisdiction. Unfortunately, there are limited emergency animal resources in our county . However, when people reach out for help—whether to us or another agency—most will try their best to point them in the right direction. For anyone who can no longer care for their pet, the best options are to contact us about surrendering the animal or to work on safely rehoming the pet. We provide resources for both of these options on our website, and sometimes other rescue organizations may also be able to assist. Most importantly, abandoning an animal is never the answer. If someone is struggling, we encourage them to reach out so we can try to help guide them to the best possible option. This is a developing story.
