Police say 19-year-old Darwin Andres Gomez-Izquiel was arrested on robbery charges Tuesday at the Queens Center Mall.
NEW YORK - Police have made a new arrest in connection with last month's attack on NYPD officers in Times Square. In addition, one of the men previously charged and released has now been rearrested for an alleged robbery.
Darwin Andres Gomez-Izquiel, 19, was accused of grabbing one officer and kicking another in the Jan. 27 Times Square assault on officers in Times Square. Police said he is part of a group that shoplifted at a Macy's in Queens and assaulted an employee Tuesday. Two other men previously charged in the Times Square case are now in ICE custody, according to a law enforcement source. They were taken into while officers were executing an arrest warrant for an unnamed person in the case, who will be arraigned later Wednesday. Wilson Juarez and Kelvin Servita Arocha were in the same apartment when that arrest occurred – contrary to widespread misinformation they had fled New York City on a bus. Five of the individuals charged in this incident are currently in law enforcement custody, and our investigation with the NYPD remains ongoing,' a spokesperson for the Manhattan DA said. Arocha is the person the DA said kicked a police radio in the Times Square case. Juarez is accused of changing jackets with the alleged instigator of the Times Square melee, Yohenry Brito. Brito had been the only one in custody being held on bail on Rikers Island, but records show he met the $15,000 bail and was released. The police union president issued a statement regarding Gomez-Izquiel's re-arrest. 'Those who attack NYC police officers have zero respect for the law. This is exactly what happens when our justice system fails to hold them accountable — they are emboldened to victimize other New Yorkers. He needs to be put back behind bars and kept there,' PBA President Patrick Hendry said. So far, seven people have been indicted in the Times Square case, and the next court appearance for all of them is Friday. There had been previous allegations that some of those released had fled on a bus to Mexico, but Wednesday's update confirms three of the four who had allegedly fled are still in New York.
