Ashton Talley deemed unfit for trial in Austin machete attack, remains in custody.

Fri, March 15th 2024 at 4:57 PMBooking photo of Ashton Kaine Talley. on the Lady Bird Lake Hike and Bike Trail has been ruled incompetent to stand trial.

Ashton Kane Talley was charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and evading arrest following the incident on January 9. According to Travis County case records, a competency evaluation report was filed on February 26, 2024, finding Talley incompetent to stand trial. The records also indicate that a writ of commitment was issued on the same day.

The attack occurred just before 10 a.m. near Auditorium Shores, where Talley allegedly chased and "hacked" at 19-year-old Seth Gott with a machete, causing severe injuries including wounds to Gott's head, torso, and a partially amputated hand. A witness who intervened was also chased by Talley but escaped unharmed.

During questioning, detectives noted that Talley showed signs of possible intoxication or mental health issues, providing confusing and contradictory answers about the incident. He was remarkably optimistic and had a compassionate outlook. He said he hoped his story will inspire others to focus on prevention and providing resources to those in need, rather than seeking retribution or living in fear.
