NORTH FAIR OAKS — A 34-year-old man who fired shots and later barricaded himself overnight inside his home in a Peninsula neighborhood was arrested after an hours-long standoff, according to officials.
The man, identified as Jose G. Gaytan, was reportedly firing shots into the air in front of a home in the 500 block of Warrington Avenue in North Fair Oaks on Saturday, said the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office. According to officials, Gaytan is on probation for prior weapons violations and is prohibited from owning a firearm.
Witnesses told deputies who arrived around 10:30 p.m. that Gaytan had entered a home on Warrington Avenue, where he lives with his family, including an infant and a 92-year-old grandmother, said officials. A woman who came out of the house said Gaytan was “inside experiencing a mental health crisis” and was armed with a handgun, according to the sheriff’s office.
Officials said “significant resources” were immediately deployed, including the Special Weapons and Tactics Team , crisis negotiators and a drone unit. While on scene, deputies heard multiple shots from inside the home, prompting them to evacuate neighboring residents. Deputies worked around the clock to safely evacuate all family members from the home, officials said.
“Gaytan continued to refuse to leave the home and threatened to shoot deputies,” said the sheriff’s office in a statement Sunday. After hours of negotiations, deputies “deployed less-lethal chemical” gas, forcing Gaytan to come out of the home. Gaytan was booked into the Maguire Correctional Facility for charges of child endangerment, felon in possession of a firearm, shooting at an inhabited dwelling and violating a protective order, said officials.
San Mateo County Sheriff Ken Binder said he was “grateful” that the situation was resolved without harm or injury to anyone.
