After her parole bid was denied, Susan Smith, the convicted murderer of her two young sons, has become noticeably hostile and uncooperative at Leath Correctional Facility. Prison employees describe a stark change in her demeanor, from a model prisoner to a difficult and seemingly unrepentant inmate.
Susan Smith , the infamous South Carolina mother who murdered her two sons in 1994, has taken a turn for the worse inside Leath Correctional Facility . Last year, when she had a chance of getting out on parole, she was surprisingly cooperative, helpful, and even pleasant according to a prison employee who spoke to The Post. But now, the employee says, she's the complete opposite - rude, bitchy, and seemingly uncaring.
This drastic change in behavior came after her parole bid was denied in November of 2023. Smith, 53, pleaded her case before a seven-member parole board, claiming she was a changed woman and had found redemption through her Christian faith. She mentioned her involvement in mentoring other inmates and her pursuit of an associate's degree in 'Christian counseling.' Her attorney, Tommy Thomas, also spoke in her favor, painting a picture of a rehabilitated prisoner. However, her request was denied, and Smith returned to prison a changed woman. Prison employees say she has become sullen and uncooperative. 'It was like a switch went off,' the employee told The Post. 'She stopped being friendly and cooperative. She isn’t keeping her areas as clean as she used to. She seems like she doesn’t care.' Even at her prison job as a wardkeeper assistant, she's allegedly slacking off and only doing the bare minimum to avoid trouble. 'She was one of the best employees before,' the source said, 'and now she does the bare minimum, so that she doesn’t get into trouble. And she’s got an attitude when she does it.' The employee believes the parole board saw right through Smith's act, stating, 'Obviously the parole board could see right through her. It just goes to show how manipulative she is.' Meanwhile, Smith's ex-husband, David Smith, and numerous family members and people connected with the case spoke out against her release. David Smith has been a vocal advocate for keeping her behind bars and has vowed to oppose her parole every two years. Smith's next opportunity for parole will be in November 2026.
