Susan Rice, President Joe Biden's top domestic policy adviser, is departing her post.
In a statement acknowledging Rice's exit, Biden remembered how he"surprised" pundits by tapping Rice for the position overseeing domestic affairs since she is"synonymous" with foreign policy, having previously been former President Barack Obama's national security adviser and ambassador to the United Nations.
"As the only person to serve as both national security adviser and domestic policy adviser, Susan's record of public service makes history," he said."But what sets her apart as a leader and colleague is the seriousness with which she takes her role and the urgency and tenacity she brings, her bias towards action and results, and the integrity, humility and humor with which she does this work.
Biden credited Rice for his administration bolstering the Affordable Care Act, releasing a comprehensive national mental health strategy, and empowering Medicare to negotiate lower prescription drug prices for seniors and cap the cost of insulin at $35. "We’ve taken historic actions to reduce gun violence and advance police reform," the president said."We are addressing our failed approach to marijuana. We have embedded equity into the work of the entire federal government. We are making college more affordable and accessible and providing student debt relief. We are increasing access to high quality child care and long-term care.
Rice, once speculated to be on Biden's vice presidential short list despite her connection to Obama's Benghazi controversy, is now reportedly tipped to be the next president of the Brookings Institution.
