Witnesses reported hearing a heated argument moments before the sound of gunshots echoed through the complex. As of now, no arrests have been made, and authorities have not released any information regarding a suspect or suspects. It remains unclear whether there was a single shooter or multiple individuals involved in the incident.Police have not yet determined a motive for the shooting but have not ruled out the possibility of high-risk activity playing a role. Importantly, investigators stated there is no evidence suggesting that Monday night's shooting is connected to the 2021 Timberview High School shooting. Selby-Mukum was the target of that attack, where his classmate, Timothy Simpkins, was convicted of attempted capital murder in 2023 and sentenced to 12 years in prison. During Simpkins' trial, prosecutors detailed a violent classroom altercation between Simpkins and Selby. Following the fight, Simpkins pulled a gun from his waistband and fired at the student who had attacked him. Selby was shot twice more after he fell to the floor in the hallway. Thankfully, Selby, another student, and a teacher involved in the incident survived. Selby himself gave testimony during Simpkins' trial
