An estimated 15.6 million adults in the United States consumed at least one potentially hepatotoxic botanical product in the past 30 days, with turmeric and green tea being the most common.

The estimated number of US adults who consumed at least one of the six most frequently reported hepatotoxic botanicals in the last 30 days is similar to the number of patients prescribed potentially hepatotoxic drugs, including nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and simvastatin.Herbal and dietary supplements are an increasingly common source of drug hepatotoxicity cases, but their prevalence and the reasons for their use among the general population are uncertain.

Participants reported their use of HDS and prescription drugs through personal interviews for a 30-day period prior to the survey date.
