All activities at Gordon Moore Park are canceled due to a mine collapse between two soccer fields. The 100-feet-wide hole swallowed a light pole and bleachers.
The sinkhole was the result of an underground mine owned by New Frontier Materials, a spokesperson told 5 On Your Side.
Haynes said the hole is approximately 100 feet wide and 30 feet deep. No one was using the field at the time of the collapse."The impacted area has been secured and will remain off limits for the foreseeable future while inspectors and experts examine the mine and conduct repairs," the New Frontier Materials representative said.
“Holy smokes, literally! I can’t believe that video of that thing. We came to the park today to play pickleball, but I guess not today,” said Amanda Tannehill. “It looks like something out of a movie, right? It looks like a bomb went off,” said Michael Haynes, the Director of Alton’s Parks and Recreation Department.
