A road rage case in Wasatch County is drawing fresh attention after newly released surveillance video revealed the moments leading up to a fatal shooting.
While the defendant, Greg DeBoer, has admitted to shooting Patrick Hayes — a shot that ended up killing Hayes — he claims it was an act of self-defense.
"Utah's self-defense statute is really clear. As long as you are somewhere where you can lawfully be, you're not the initial aggressor, or you're not committing a felony, you don't have to retreat,” Lazaro said. “So didn't have to leave once Patrick got out of his car.
Hayes’ family is struggling to reconcile the self-defense claim with what they see as deliberate actions that escalated the confrontation. “I’m realizing more and more as I talk to more and more attorneys that it’s not about what is right — It’s about the law,” she said.
