Spider-Man Brand New Day star Tom Holland suited up to fight in Spider-Man No Way Home
A new reveal regarding the cast of Spider-Man: Brand New Day indicates the MCU is getting yet another Captain America coypcat. Marvel Comics is full of characters trying to emulate Captain America, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe has done well to take a page from that.
The MCU now has a slew of characters created in Captain America's image, from U.S. Agent to Isaiah Bradley. There's also Red Guardian, who is essentially the Sentinel of Liberty's Russian counterpart. He represents a wider trend in the comics, as multiple countries in its world have an answer to Captain America.Tarantula Is Delvadia's Answer To Captain America In Marvel Comics Artwork for Spider-Man: Brand New Day confirmed the MCU designs for three of Spider-Man's costumed foes in the film: Michael Mando's Scorpion, Boomerang and Tarantula. The latter of the three is a supervillain from the fictional, South American dictatorship of Delvadia, and a long-running antagonist of Peter Parker. Introduced in The Amazing Spider-Man #136, Anton Rodriguez was a well-trained martial artist and revolutionary who eventually turned traitor and became a pawn of the oppressive government he once sought to overthrow. Equipped with weapons and given the codename"Tarantula," Rodriguez became their champion, serving as a South American fascist version of Captain America. That chapter of his life ended in scandal, which is what resulted in him coming to the United States and reinventing himself as a thug-for-hire. It was this development that set into motion Tarantula's evolution from an evil Captain America archetype to a B-list Spider-Man villain. What Spider-Man: Brand New Day May Have Planned For Tarantula There's a strong possibility that the MCU will keep the fundamental premise of Tarantula's Marvel Comics backstory when it translates him to the big screen. Given the number of villains Spider-Man: Brand New Day will have on hand, it's likely that Tarantula won't have a major role, but the Captain America connection could be used to tie his introduction to existing MCU lore, making him more of an organic fit. After all, given that the Soviet Union had its own Captain America in Red Guardian, it's not hard to imagine someone like Tarantula existing in the MCU as somewhat of a fascist Captain America now operating as a mercenary in New York City. Like his comic book counterpart, Tarantula may see his new line of work putting him at odds with Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. It could be that he'll be working as a lackey to whichever character winds up filling the role of the movie's main villain.
