Surge in reported in-flight sexual assaults lands in Seattle attorney's office

When sexual assaults happen on flights to Seattle, the cases land at the office of U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Washington Tessa Gorman.

Gorman says the federal prosecutors have seen sharp rise in reports sex assaults on board airplanes, but she credits that to victims being more willing to report it when it happens.

“Alcohol is not an excuse,” Lindquist said. “Alcohol is not a defense to sexual assault. Still, alcohol seems to be involved in every one of the cases I’ve seen. Airlines need to be more cautious about overserving.”“The victim reported sexual assault, a witness corroborated the assault, and yet the crew took almost 15 minutes to move the drunk passenger to a different seat. At this point, training and protocols on airlines, or some airlines, are woefully inadequate,” he said.

There are FBI agents assigned to the 450 airports with passenger service that are regulated by the Transportation Security Administration, as well as local law enforcement,
