Photo: Jabin Botsford/The Washington Post/Getty Images The news this weekend that Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is again being treated for pancreatic cancer was bad news for progressives, first because she has become a revered, even beloved, judicial figure in recent years. But beyond that, the possibility of a vacancy on the Supreme Court prior to the 2020 elections is a contingency with enormous consequences.
If her health takes a turn for the worse and she is forced to step down, however, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell has left no doubt that he’ll move to confirm a Trump-nominated Justice even if the vacancy arises during the 2020 election year.
