The Supreme Court will decide the fate of popular video-sharing app TikTok after it hears arguments on Friday over whether a law banning the China-linked company from operating in the United States should be allowed to go into effect.

Justices will hear arguments on whether the app should be allowed to continue to operate Friday morning and will weigh in on an area with little precedent from the high court in social media. Proceedings are scheduled to last for two hours but may go on longer as the high court weighs the future of one of the most popular social media websites in operation.in the U.S. by the Jan. 19 deadline unless the Supreme Court intervenes in some way. It has refused to consider selling to a U.S.

TikTok has denied that it has ever shared data with China and would refuse any such request to do so but those arguments have not been persuasive for lawmakers in Washington or the Biden administration. The bill banning the app passed with broad bipartisan support and was quickly signed by the president.from being banned in a reversal of his original position after his first administration briefly tried to shut down the app in his final months in office.

Trump and some GOP lawmakers have claimed he would be uniquely positioned to find a U.S. buyer for TikTok that could alleviate the national security concerns, though there are questions about whether a change in administration would change ByteDance’s stance on selling it. It is also considered unlikely for any sale to include its powerful algorithm that drives its popularity, meaning a buyer would need to create a new one even if they got access to the platform.
