A new poll suggests the Supreme Court’s recent rulings supporting the DACA program and barring workplace discrimination against LGBTQ employees have made the high court more popular among Americans—with support for the Supreme Court rising from 42% to 48%

8, 2019, as the Court holds oral arguments in three cases dealing with workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation. Between June 13 and June 20, Democratic support for the Supreme Court shot up by 26 points, with 56% of respondents approving of the court after the decisions as compared with only 30% before.

Support among Republicans fell from 68% to 51%, while Independents’ approval of the court rose more marginally from 39% to 43%. Justice Neil Gorsuch, who was appointed by President Donald Trump and delivered the majority opinion in the decision prohibiting anti-LGBTQ workplace discrimination, has specifically became more popular among Democrats, with his approval rating rising by 31% between March 1-3, 2020 and June 20-23.

Republicans’ opinion of Gorsuch, however, has plummeted, with the justice’s approval rating declining by 34.4% between March and June.The recent Supreme Court decisions were unexpected successes for Democrats, as the court has been viewed as particularly politicized and conservative-leaning since the confirmation of Justice Brett Kavanaugh, a Trump appointee whose predecessor Anthony Kennedy was regarded as a more moderate voice on the court.
