People gathered at the park in protest and to watch the flag be reinstalled at the site, which is considered the birthplace of the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. The monument recognizes The Stonewall Inn, a legendary Manhattan gay bar that was the site of a 1969 uprising credited as a turning point in the modern LGBTQ rights movement. The decision to take down the flag has drawn backlash from national civil rights groups, LGBTQ+ advocates, and New York officials. The Supreme Court ruled against Colorado's ban on "conversion therapy" for LGBTQ+ children in Colorado, siding with a Christian counselor who argued the restriction violates her First Amendment rights. In an 8-1 decision on Tuesday, the justices said the law raises significant free speech concerns before sending the case back to a lower court to determine whether it meets a strict legal standard that few laws survive. The ruling marks the latest in a series of decisions in which the court has been receptive to claims of religious discrimination while taking a more skeptical view of laws involving LGBTQ rights.Counselor Kaley Chiles -- backed by President Donald Trump and his administration -- argued the law prevents her from providing voluntary, faith-based counseling to minors. She said her approach differs from older forms of conversion therapy, such as aversion techniques, adding that the ban limits options for families seeking counseling that does not affirm gender transition. Colorado officials defended the law, saying it does not prohibit open discussions about sexual orientation or gender identity and includes exemptions for religious ministries. Instead, the state said, the measure targets efforts to change a person’s identity, a practice widely discredited by medical professionals and linked to mental health risks. The state also argued the law regulates professional conduct, not speech, noting that therapy is a form of health care subject to oversight. The 2019 law allows for penalties such as fines or license suspension, though no enforcement actions have been taken.
