The Supreme Court in a midnight order declined to stop a Texas law banning abortions after six weeks, letting the state essentially undercut he Court’s 1973 decision in Roe v. Wade legalizing abortion nationwide.

Five conservative justices voted to deny a request from abortion providers in the state for a Court order temporarily blocking the law from taking effect while they appeal in lower courts. The conservative chief justice, John Roberts, sided with the three liberals against the order. The Texas law went into effect at midnight on Wednesday.
