BREAKING: The US Supreme Court has struck down President Joe Biden’s long-delayed student loan forgiveness plan.
In a 6-3 decision on Friday, the high court ruled that Biden exceeded his authority with a plan to forgive an estimated $400billion in federal student loan debt.
The Biden administration argued that the program was lawful under the 2003 Higher Education Relief Opportunities for Students Act, or HEROES Act. The law states that the government can provide relief to student loan recipients if there is a ‘national emergency’ to ensure they do not wind up in ‘a worse position financially’.
‘The Secretary asserts that the HEROES Act grants him the authority to cancel $430billion of student loan principal. It does not,’ wrote Roberts in his majority ruling.
