Supporting the monarchy and being anti-racist are incompatible – as Harry is about to find out ✒️ kubared for ipaperviews

I’m not naive about why there’s a contradiction between his desires and what seems to be an ingrained obligation not just to his family, but to the institution of the royals. But despite his rejection of the confines of serving the Royal Family directly, Harry’s deference to some aspects of the monarchy is steeped in a sense of privilege that he may not ever be able to shake, lack of titles or not.

For anyone who recently jumped on the “you’re alright, for a royal” train because of what really does appear to be Harry’s genuine attempt to unlearn prejudices, or indeed because of Meghan and/or the treatment she’s received, the interview was a reminder of how much harder he’ll have to work to retain that trust.

Over the years, Harry has repeatedly talked about how he’s done “the work” to acknowledge the ideas that led him to “unconscious bias”, encouraging others to do the same. Though I’ve never assumed otherwise, the clumsiness of his handling of the topic in that interview has made it that much clearer that there’s a lot more work to be done all round – for Harry and society at large.

Regardless of my investment or lack thereof in Harry and Meghan’s success, I do hope those lessons are learned soon. If nothing else, the conversations they inspire when they do get things right are far more impactful than serving the Commonwealth ever would have been.
