Rising support for Vice President Harris reflects a belief among Democratic insiders that she is the best person to replace President Biden if he drops out.
Democratic strategists, donors and others on the left have quietly started rallying around Vice President Kamala Harris since President Biden's disastrous debate performance, in a growing acknowledgment among many in the party that Harris remains the most likely person to replace Biden -- whenever that moment might come.
Harris has the advantage of already being on the ticket and could benefit further if Biden endorsed her and asked his pledged delegates to shift their support to Harris at the DNC.Whether Harris could beat Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, in a general election matchup is another matter. Even Democrats who view the vice president as Biden's most likely replacement acknowledge she would face an uphill battle against Trump.
