A resolution would require donors to disclose why they want to fund bringing the bears, as well as any potential conflicts of interest
The San Francisco Board of Supervisors will vote next week on whether to approve Mayor London Breed ’s quest to bring pandas to The City by soliciting private philanthropic donations.
Prior to Thursday’s meeting, the resolution was also amended to clarify where money goes, whether that be contributing to capital improvements or securing food. Dawes cited previous unsafe situations, including a zookeeper being chased by a grizzly bear, a baby penguin being killed by a guillotine door and a young gorilla being crushed by a hydraulic door. She added that some enclosures were unsuitable for modern animal care, such as the zoos still keeping bears in pits rather than a large, open space adequate for roaming.

Supervisor Dean Preston, who chairs the Government Audit and Oversight Committee, noted that some of the issues speakers raised during the meeting were “beyond a behested waiver payment resolution.”
