As The City’s most powerful public-safety unions mull potential endorsements, San Francisco politicians are scrambling to stand out
.
Sponsors of both proposals stand behind them as good policy, despite scrutiny from the Rules Committee, which significantly amended the firefighters measure to reduce its cost and attempted to kill the police measure. Board of Supervisors President Aaron Peskin, who is running for mayor and along with Supervisor Matt Dorsey sponsored the police retirement measure, noted in an interview with The Examiner in an interview last week that the Police Officers Association hasn’t taken a stance on the Deferred Retirement Option Plan, or DROP, measure.
Stefani’s proposal drew criticism from Ronen for offering the fire department better retirement benefits than any other San Francisco department, walking back reforms The City implemented to level the playing field more than a decade ago. But Stefani, who is running for State Assembly, stood by the proposal, noting the exposure to carcinogens faced by firefighters.
Firefighters are voting on their endorsement in the mayoral race following the debate and the results are expected to be released in August. The firefighters spent heavily and worked hard in support of Breed in her first successful run for mayor in 2018, but it’s unclear if they will be willing to do so again.
