16, the Board of Supervisors will vote on making Sept. 15 – Oct. 15 Hispanic Heritage Month in LA County. When the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors vote on Tuesday, Sept. 16 to honor Latino culture and contributions in a motion establishing Hispanic Heritage Month, one supervisor says it will be more than a celebration, it will also be a call to action. That’s because First District Supervisor Hilda Solis sees the time between Sept. 15 and Oct. 15 as not just about parades, cultural displays and food. “This year, however, allowing ICE to resume the raids and street sweeps based primarily on perceived race or ethnicity that began in June to comply with President Donald Trump’s mass deportation order. “This ruling allows federal officers to stop individuals based on language, appearance, or occupation. It opens the door to racial profiling and sends a harmful and dangerous message to the very communities this month is meant to uplift,” added Solis. “SCOTUS’s is a win for the safety and security of the American people and the rule of law,” said U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem on X last week after the decision. “Our brave @DHSGov law enforcement will continue our operations in L.A. to remove the worst of the worst criminal illegal aliens that pose a danger to public safety.” Los Angeles County had seen waves of raids in recent months. Prime locations have been big-box home-improvement stores such as Home Depot, the bustling MacArthur Park neighborhood in Westlake, and open-air markets andApproximately 247 car wash workers have disappeared due to arrests from federal immigration raids, according to the nonprofit CLEAN Car Wash Workers Center. The Department of Homeland Security said in early September that more than 5,000 immigration arrests have been made since June 6. The administration stands behind its immigration strategy, declaring it is ridding the nation of the “worst of the worst” criminal immigrants who are in the nation illegally. However, many immigrant and day labor support groups say that ICE is no longer targeting solely criminals or undocumented immigrants. More than 70% of those who have been detained in recent months across the country have never been convicted of a crime, according to the Deportation Data Project.. They want the county to establish a fund to provide rent for those who have seen primary breadwinners get arrested or detained, leaving families without a stable income and leading to inability to pay rent. The emergency rental relief fund is an attempt by L.A. County to help prevent more people from becoming homeless. Also, Solis and Horvath will introduce a motion asking County Counsel to prepare an eviction moratorium for those impacted by the federal immigration raids. “Through every legal, policy, and community-based tool available, we will push back against discriminatory enforcement and ensure our communities are safe, respected, and supported,” Solis added.Man steals ambulance from fatal stabbing scene at Downey Library, leads police in pursuitNational Merit 2026: Los Angeles County scholarship semifinalists announcedEmmys 2025: Biggest trends on the red carpet at the Emmy AwardsMan killed in Lawndale shooting believed to be gang-related
