Supernatural's Prequel Show Could've Been Something Special, But One Factor Doomed It From The Start

Supernatural's prequel was doomed by one factor.

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Supernatural's prequel, The Winchesters, had the potential to pay homage to its parent show and impress fans, but one thing was against it from the start: time.

While Supernatural is no stranger to spin-off attempts, The Winchesters is the first one that got the green light. However, different from other ideas like Bloodlines or Wayward Sisters, which would focus on characters introduced in the main show who fans didn't get much time with, The Winchesters was a re-imagining of characters fans knew all too well. The prequel relayed the love story of John and Mary Winchester as young adults, rewriting some details, most notably John knowing about Mary's family hunting before they were even officially dating. This may have seemed like a recycled story, but the bigger issue was timing, with the show being canceled after just one season. Executive producer and long-time Supernatural star, Jensen Ackles, echoed this in a tweet saying, "A massive network shift coupled with an industry strike, [that’s] some unfortunate timing." Despite audience skepticism, The Winchesters offered something new, and it could have been better received if it was rather released at a later stage. The Winchesters Happened Too Soon After Supernatural Ended After 15 seasons and 327 episodes, Supernatural ended in 2020 with a loyal global fanbase. However, with a dedicated fanbase came high expectations, with some fans excited about The Winchesters and some not. When the show premiered, it was met with mixed reviews, many disappointed by the apparent disregard for already-established lore regarding Mary and John. Releasing only two years after the parent show's series finale, the premiere didn't give fans time to mourn the end of Supernatural before being taken back in time to follow the story of characters other than the beloved Sam and Dean. Despite the fans' commitment to the Supernatural universe, the prequel jumped the gun. With the network shift and perhaps the less-than-desirable ratings, The Winchesters didn't have the time Supernatural did to wow new audiences and existing fans. Following in the footsteps of a show that formed such a solidified part of the Warner Bros. and CW family was no easy feat. Had The Winchesters taken the time to fine-tune the development, it may have had a brighter future, acting as a return to the Supernatural universe after giving fans time to miss the parent show. Why The Winchesters Would've Been More Special If The Show Didn't Happen So Fast While it's arguable that retconning a story about two familiar characters may not have been a good idea at any time, there was some merit in approaching it from a fresh angle. For instance, rehashing the formulaic approach of a duo facing a monster of the week to help fans feel comfortable in familiarity may have fallen flat, but The Winchesters season 1 could have been a solid setup for a much larger story it never got to tell. By introducing the alternate universe in the season finale, it created opportunity for more fan-favorite characters to reappear in subsequent seasons. This, like the inclusion of Dean as a narrator and a character, could have been a huge pull to win over any fans still on the fence about the show, had it continued beyond season 1, because it draws on nostalgia. Particularly since, after the finale, many fans helped promote #SaveTheWinchesters campaign after the CW cancellation, the prequel showed potential to keep the Supernatural universe alive while paying homage to missed characters and telling new stories. At the end of the day, The Winchesters needed a bit more time since, after all, absence makes the heart grow fonder.
