Two titans of the superhero genre, Superman and Fantastic Four, are set to clash in a summer box office battle. With both films releasing in close proximity, the question arises: which movie will ultimately emerge victorious?
Superman and The Fantastic Four: First Steps are scheduled for release within weeks of each other, but early trailers suggest a potential victor. Superhero movies have faced challenges in recent years, with declining box office returns and audience enthusiasm. The Multiverse Saga in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has struggled to maintain the same level of engagement as the Infinity Saga.
Meanwhile, the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) has been effectively shelved, leaving many storylines unresolved. However, both the MCU and the DC Universe (DCU) are poised for a fresh start. Superman will spearhead DC Studios' new franchise, while Fantastic Four: First Steps will introduce Marvel's First Family to the big screen. Both films are set to premiere in July 2025, with Superman releasing on July 11th and Fantastic Four on July 25th. Adding to the excitement, Jurassic World: Rebirth, the first installment in a new trilogy based on the Jurassic Park franchise, will also be released in July on July 2nd. This convergence of three major franchises within a single month promises to be a blockbuster summer for moviegoers. For DC, this marks a significant moment as their last theatrical release was Aquaman 2 in December 2023, which continued the narrative of the DCEU. Marvel has a shorter gap, with Captain America: Brave New World premiering in February and Thunderbolts in May. However, Fantastic Four kicks off Phase 6 and concludes the Multiverse Saga. Initial reactions to the trailers suggest that Superman may have the upper hand. Its December 2023 trailer amassed a staggering 24 million views within 24 hours, surpassing previous records for DCEU projects and garnering over a million likes in the same period. While Fantastic Four: First Steps' trailer, released shortly after, garnered 21 million views and 750,000 likes in the first 24 hours, Superman's response seems to be more favorable at this early stage.Predicting the box office outcome is challenging. The MCU previously achieved record-breaking success with Avengers: Endgame, which held the top spot for highest-grossing film until Avatar's re-releases surpassed it. However, since the Infinity Saga concluded, only two of the 11 theatrically released MCU films have surpassed the $1 billion mark. This is in stark contrast to the Infinity Saga, where 23 movies were released, with nine exceeding $1 billion and two even reaching over $2 billion. It remains to be seen if Fantastic Four can achieve similar financial success. Superman, as the flagship hero of DC and the cornerstone of the rebooted DCU, carries significant weight. The film's July release date allows ample time for strong box office performance. However, considering the history of the DCEU and previous Superman movies, achieving blockbuster figures might be a tall order.
