But given his status as one of the most beloved fictional characters, that comes with passionate debates about the characterization, whether it be storylines or how they tackle his costume.
When it comes to Superman's suit, the trunks have always been something fans argue about, with debates about whether or not he should have them on the outside of his suit being commonplace. This is even something that is being heavily discussed for James Gunn's Superman: Legacy costume. However, a clever theory on Reddit by Jetsam5 may finally properly answer why Superman wears his trunks on the outside.
JetSam5 believes the blanket Martha and Jonathan found him in would have "to be incredibly large, made out of three distinct colors," before she was able to cut through the fabric. Instead of the whole suit being made of that fabric, they think it was small enough to make the trunks, hence its indestructibility.
If this theory is actually DC's reasoning, it would also add more justifications for those in favor of Superman having trunks on the outside, as it would then become a more actively practical decision. If the trunks actually serve a function, that would also explain why recent Superman comics have brought back that look. But whether or not this is actually the case will remain unanswered until DC creatives actually see the theory for themselves.
For Superman. Legacy, it would be neat if this is actually something that gets explored in Gunn's DC Universe, allowing the film to add another aspect that other live-action projects may not have focused a lot on previously. That is, if David Corenswet's Superman actually ends up having the trunks at all, which is unclear given DC Studios co-CEO Gunn has been very cryptic about the matter when responding to questions regarding the suit.
