El superintendente de las escuelas de Roosevelt, Dr. Shawn Wightman, hizo un viaje por cuenta propia desde el condado de Nassau, Nueva York, hasta San Marcos, Guatemala, para entregar un paquete especial a un alumno.
Cuando le preguntaron si la historia de Álvaro Velásquez le había afectado, Wightman respondió: "Sí. Como superintendente y como padre, es muy difícil pensar en que algo así le hubiera pasado a cualquiera de mis hijos". El pasado mes de mayo, a solo unas semanas de su graduación del instituto, Velásquez fue detenido por ICE y nunca llegó a su graduación. "No era un delincuente peligroso ni nada por el estilo, no tenía ningún tipo de record. Ese fue el momento en el que todo el mundo se dio cuenta de que esto es algo real", dijo Wightman. Velasquez fue trasladado a un centro de detención en Texas, donde pasó meses solo, antes de auto-deportarse a Guatemala. En septiembre, Wightman visitó el centro de detención porque consideraba que Velásquez se merecía su toga, su birrete y su diploma. Pero no le dejaron entrar.Sabía que tenía que volver a intentarlo. Tras negarse a rendirse, Wightman tomó dos vuelos y realizó un viaje en vehículo de cinco horas y media a través de las colinas de Guatemala, donde finalmente se reunió con Velásquez y su familia."Cuando lo detuvieron, muchos de nosotros nos quedamos muy afectados", dijo Wightman.Desde que Velásquez fue detenido, otros tres estudiantes de Roosevelt han sido trastornadas por ICE. Uno fue detenido, otro probablemente será deportado y un tercero, cuyo padre fue detenido, ahora tiene que trabajar para mantener a la familia."No me siento solo.
