#Supergirl: Strengths and Shortcomings in DC Universe's Standalone Superhero Film#
Nearly a year after the release of James Gunn's Superman, the DC Universe releases its sophomore outing in Supergirl. The movie picks up after the ending of Superman, revealing that Clark had been watching Krypto for his cousin, Kara, who'd been partying off-planet.
When Kara, played by Milly Alcock, starts her journey in Supergirl, she's still partying hard, celebrating her 23rd birthday, bringing Krypto along, and avoiding calls from her cousin. Meanwhile, a young girl named Ruthye Marye Knoll enters the bar where Kara's partying, seeking revenge against the brigand Krem of the Yellow Hills, who killed her family. Kara, however, only goes on the adventure when Krem poisons Krypto, giving her three days to find an antidote.
The movie has an emotional journey, cool action sequences, and a fun turn from Jason Momoa as the interstellar bounty hunter Lobo, but there's still a missing conviction. Supergirl's character is a bit of a mess, with shortcomings in the emotional journey and the performance of the characters that detract from the movie's strengths and enjoyable moments.
Supergirl is a fine, even good, superhero movie that falls a bit short of the bar set by Superman last summer, launching a competing superhero franchise led by a female hero. Supergirl doesn't feel as impactful as it should, given the potential of the DCU as a superhero franchise and the rarity of female-led solo movies hitting the theaters, even after the success of Wonder Woman and its sequel.
Supergirl is a summer popcorn movie, even if it doesn't explore Kara's character as deeply as Gunn's Superman did, preventing it from making a bigger impact on the world of superhero adaptations
