Super Typhoon Uwan caused widespread flooding, storm surge, and lahar flow in the Bicol Region, prompting mass evacuations and disrupting essential services. The storm, packing powerful winds, is expected to make landfall in Aurora.

Super Typhoon Uwan unleashed its fury across the Bicol Region on Sunday morning, triggering widespread storm surge , lahar flow, and severe flooding, as reported by the Office of Civil Defense (OCD). Assistant Secretary Bernardo Rafaelito Alejandro IV, OCD deputy administrator for administration, detailed the unfolding crisis during a press conference. Reports flooded in of inundated areas, including Barangay Masarawag in Guinobatan, Albay, where lahar flow exacerbated existing vulnerabilities.

The threat of lahar, a destructive mudflow comprised of volcanic debris and water, is a persistent concern in the region during typhoon events. Further reports revealed storm surges and flooding in Virac, Catanduanes, specifically affecting Barangay Gogon, San Isidro, and Imelda Boulevard, along with reported flooding in Gigmoto, Catanduanes. The devastation extended beyond immediate flooding, with reports of power outages and water supply disruptions across Bicol. Communication lines were also down in the towns of Bato and Pandan in Catanduanes, further complicating rescue and relief efforts. The combination of these impacts paints a grim picture of the typhoon’s destructive power, underscoring the urgency of disaster response.\As of 11 a.m., the proactive measures of preemptive evacuations had resulted in the relocation of 916,863 individuals, encompassing 270,682 families, from their homes. These evacuations extended across a broad spectrum of regions, including the Cordillera Administrative Region, Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Metro Manila, Bicol, Western Visayas, Central Visayas, and Eastern Visayas. The Bicol Region bore the brunt of the evacuations, with 660,721 individuals displaced. Eastern Visayas followed with 112,760 evacuees, and Calabarzon with 74,388 people seeking safety. This large-scale displacement highlights the widespread threat posed by Uwan and the crucial role of proactive safety protocols. The State weather bureau, PAGASA, reported that Uwan was positioned over the coastal waters of Pandan, Catanduanes, packing maximum sustained winds of 185 kilometers per hour (kph) near its center, with gusts reaching up to 230 kph. The super typhoon was moving west northwestward at a speed of 30 kph, indicating its continued trajectory across the affected areas.\According to PAGASA's latest bulletin, Super Typhoon Uwan was projected to continue its path over the coastal waters of Catanduanes, passing closely to Calaguas and Polillo Islands on Sunday morning and afternoon, respectively. The super typhoon was then expected to make landfall at or near its peak intensity over the central portion of Aurora on Sunday evening or early Monday morning. PAGASA also highlighted the possibility of a direct hit from the eyewall affecting Calaguas and Polillo Islands without making landfall, suggesting a heightened risk for these areas. The intensity of Uwan and its trajectory underscored the need for continued vigilance and preparedness as the storm advanced across the country. The anticipated landfall location in Aurora adds a new dimension to the emergency response, with authorities preparing to deal with the impacts of a super typhoon making direct landfall. The combination of strong winds, storm surge, and heavy rainfall presents a severe threat, necessitating continued efforts to protect lives and mitigate damage
