The Waratahs have been thereabouts of late but nonetheless head into Friday’s all-Australian clash with an unenviable 1-4 record and time fast running out.
We are in for a nail biting finish. Will Harrison has set up a try for Jack Grant and the Rebels are now only leading by one point, with four minutes to play. The Rebels have scored again and guess who? Yep, it’s that man Taniela Tupou.
This time the lineout worked well for the visitors and from a well-set platform, Alex Mafi broke left and found Darby Lancaster open. The winger dived in the corner and scored to give the Rebels a one-point lead.Soon after the Waratahs had botched a prime scoring opportunity when lock Miles Amatosero missed the ball on the ball when trying to tap it and charge to the line, the hosts finally crashed over for a second try to Langi Gleeson.
Okay, so that wasn’t what you’d call a classic opening half. Let’s call a spade a spade and say that 40 minutes of footy had her fair share of warts. The opportunistic try set up by Louwrens sparked a brief flurry of activity, and it woke the Tahs up, who responded with a gamblers’ try too - via a couple of nice offloads.Neither side is setting the world on fire in attack, with poor options and a haste to go wide instead of attacking directly.Hugh Sinclair has been given a yellow card for dangerous head contact with Lachie Anderson, that left both men with cuts and blood all over them.
The Tahs almost scored a second from the re-start, with Izzy Perese charged out of the 22 and four sets of hands saw Dylan Pietsch streak away down the left sideline for 80 metres. But Carter Gordon saved the day with a superb cover tackle - and with two unmarked Waratahs left screaming for the ball on the inside, it was a butchered try. Finally some points after a snoozy opening - and fittingly it came via a wacky try to the Rebels.
