SMB Wonder appears set to bring new boss fights.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Super Mario Bros. Wonder is set to be something of a triumphant return for the iconic platforming series, and it's poised to resolve an unfortunate trend regarding boss battles from the most recent games.
The Super Mario Bros. games specifically – those that follow the classic 2D, side-scrolling formula – have been out of the limelight for over a decade, with New Super Mario Bros. U being the last dedicated release back in 2012. Super Mario Maker and its sequel have been wonderful, creative diversions in the meantime, but Wonder seems to be a much-needed fresh take on the Mario brothers' roots, including a shake-up to the series' boss roster. Super Mario Bros. is no stranger to re-emergence. 1995's Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island was the last 2D side-scroller before the massively influential, must-play classic game Super Mario 64 waylaid the series with 3D entries until New Super Mario Bros. landed on the Nintendo DS in 2006. The New SMB run lasted through four entries, and while they all have the engaging gameplay expected of the series, many features – their art style especially – grew tiresome with stagnation. One such sticking point is their over-reliance on the Koopalings as world bosses, which Super Mario Bros. Wonder appears ready to remedy.Super Mario Bros. Wonder Could Be Introducing New World Bosses Information on Super Mario Bros. Wonder has remained scarce since its announcement at June 2023's Nintendo Direct. Ahead of the game's October 20 release date, though, it's been rated by the ESRB, receiving an expected E, for "Everyone." While the rating summary confirms the return of Bowser as Wonder's villain, one interesting inclusion pertains to the game's other big bads, saying, "Boss battles contain more involved combat against giant enemies that breathe fire and smash parts of the scenery." Breathing fire is Bowser's MO, but the other tidbits could be taken as hints suggesting the Koopalings have been replaced for the latest Super Mario Bros. Super Mario Bros. Wonder Might Be Replacing The Koopalings Even though the Koopalings debuted in Super Mario Bros. 3, the best 2D Super Mario Bros. game, they overstayed their welcome in the New SMB era. Iggy, Larry, Lemmy, Ludwig, Morton Jr., Roy, and Wendy O. appeared as bosses in three consecutive games – New SMB Wii, New SMB 2, and New SMB U. Granted, each game attempted to put unique twists on them, moving their locations between mid-world towers, castles, and airships, with various stage layouts, and novel fight mechanics. Regardless, the last three Super Mario Bros. games have each had the same set of bosses, all defeated in the same manner: Mario and company's specialty, jumping on their heads. The Koopaling boss battles have always fell within the realm of "more involved combat" compared to the rest of the games' enemies, but Super Mario Bros. Wonder's apparent emphasis on "giant enemies" for its boss battles sounds like a new direction. The SMB Wonder trailer hints at just a single boss battle, which has shades of Koopaling, but is noticeably different. The color scheme isn't consistent with the Koopalings' usual designs, having a deep blue Koopa body and green gradient hair, and it's sporting some sort of helmet in the midst of a battle where it appears to be repeatedly swapping sizes with a fireball-slinging Mario. As Super Mario Bros. Wonder's announcement trailer, it's likely this footage is of an early-game boss. This one doesn't necessarily qualify as a giant enemy, but that descriptor is unfortunately vague. It's entirely possible this is just some new form of Koopaling, which would be disappointing, but this short clip shows no signs of the boss "[smashing] parts of the scenery." Wonder's entire trailer oozes creativity – much more than the New Super Mario Bros. games ever did – so it seems improbable the bog-standard Koopaling boss fights are making a return. A completely fresh roster of secondary villains would certainly help Super Mario Bros. Wonder separate itself from a tiresome era of boss battles.
