New research has uncovered America's most beloved Super Bowl snacks, highlighting a preference for traditional game-day favorites like hot wings, barbecue, and seven-layer dip. The survey, conducted by Talker Research, also explored regional variations in food preferences and how American tastes have evolved over the decades.

Sports fans are gearing up for not just the Super Bowl and halftime show, but also the food associated with the annual event. Hot wings, pizza, and multi-layered dip are among the country's favorite Super Bowl foods, new research has shown. In a survey of 2,000 adults in the U.S.

aged over 21, conducted by Talker Research in December 2024 on behalf of antacid tablet TUMS, the top five foods that Americans say are necessary for a Super Bowl party were found to be buffalo/hot wings (named by 49 percent), barbecued meat (37 percent), seven-layer dip (36 percent), pizza (30 percent) and chicken tenders/nuggets (30 percent). Donovan Conley, a University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) communication studies professor, told Newsweek that the biggest trend he sees in the survey results is that more locally specific foods are the least popular. Conley is a rhetorician who researches how cultural influences shape our everyday habits, preferences, biases, and desires, particularly in the area of food and taste. 'I look for how food discourse takes shape across the 'surface' of cultural practices,' Conley said, adding that 'taste, as a social and material phenomenon, is my core interest.' For example, 'Po' boys are awesome, but they're likely too regionally specific for Super Bowl primetime,' Conley said. Po' boys as well as spicy gumbo, another dish from Louisiana, were considered a favorite Super Bowl dish among only around one to two percent of Americans across five regions in the U.S., including the northeast, southeast, southwest, Midwest, and west. Across the whole of the country, the top choices for 'the perfect plate' of food to watch the game with included barbecued meat (chosen by 34 percent), wings (33 percent), seven-layer dip (24 percent) and brownies (22 percent). Chicken tenders and/or nuggets (22 percent), nachos (21 percent) and pizza (20 percent) also made the top 10 ranking of foods that would make the ideal plate
