A recent survey by Paycom reveals a significant spike in sick-day requests on the Monday following Super Bowl LIX, demonstrating the impact of America's biggest sporting event on employee well-being.
Super Bowl LIX is a monumental event in the American calendar, drawing in millions of viewers for a variety of reasons. From the thrilling matchup between the competing teams to the lively watch parties and the anticipation of captivating commercials, the Super Bowl offers a unique blend of entertainment and cultural significance. However, the Monday following the Super Bowl often brings a wave of fatigue and lethargy, leading to a noticeable spike in sick-day requests across the country.
A recent survey by Paycom, a leading human capital management software company, reveals that this trend is far from uncommon. The survey, which analyzed sick-day requests from 6.8 million workers across a range of U.S. companies, showed a staggering 63% increase in sick leave requests on the Monday following Super Bowl LIX compared to an average weekday in 2024. This spike was even more pronounced compared to the average day in February, with a 51% increase in requests. Managers, seemingly understanding the post-Super Bowl exhaustion, approved a whopping 91% of sick-day requests on that Monday, making it the second-highest percentage of approved sick days throughout the entire year. While the Monday after the Super Bowl landed as the 12th-highest day for sick-day requests in 2024, it's worth noting that the top 10 'sickest' days were concentrated in December and January, indicating a common post-holiday slump. This data provides a fascinating glimpse into the impact of the Super Bowl on American work culture, highlighting the importance of employee well-being and the potential for companies to embrace flexibility during periods of heightened societal engagement
