Fox Sports and Comcast are preparing for Super Bowl LIX with a familiar approach to presentation, leveraging 4K HDR and upscaling technology. Comcast introduces Dolby Atmos for the first time, promising an immersive audio experience. The inclusion of a Super Slowmo / 4K SkyCam by Fox Sports adds an element of novelty to the viewing experience.
Super Bowl LIX will largely adhere to familiar presentation standards this Sunday. Fox Sports will capture the game in 1080p HDR , upscaling it to 4K for its own networks and the free Tubi live stream. Comcast has announced it will broadcast the game in Dolby Vision , a format it has used previously, but this year with the addition of Dolby Atmos for the first time.
While the Atmos audio is likely to be a virtualized surround signal, it could enhance the viewing experience if you have a good home theater setup. Comcast states that the Dolby Vision / Atmos broadcast of Super Bowl LIX will be accessible to Xfinity TV subscribers as part of its Enhanced 4K offerings. This package aims to deliver an unparalleled viewing experience with superior picture and sound quality, ensuring that the action at home is only seconds behind the game unfolding in New Orleans. Xfinity Stream subscribers can also watch the game through this platform. The visual quality will resemble what audiences have witnessed in recent years. However, you might notice unique shots as the Eagles and Chiefs compete. Fox Sports is employing a Super Slowmo / 4K SkyCam for the first time during a Super Bowl, prompting curiosity about its deployment during the game. While some viewers still prefer the traditional OTA antenna method for the most unadulterated feed, I personally find the HDR experience more compelling, wherever it's available. The wider color gamut makes a noticeable difference, and the upscaled 4K image appears to meet the acceptable standard for the massive audience tuning in on Sunday, if this approach continues to be employed. Last year's game garnered an average viewership of 123.4 million across all platforms, according to the NFL. (Disclosure: Comcast is an investor in Vox Media, The Verge’s parent company.
