Navigating grocery stores for Super Bowl food will be a challenge this year due to fluctuating prices. Some items will be more expensive, while others will be cheaper. Wells Fargo economists provide insights on the price trends of popular Super Bowl foods and offer tips for saving money.

Navigating the supermarket aisles for Super Bowl food will be a challenge this year, as prices for game-day staples are expected to fluctuate like a 'seesaw,' according to Wells Fargo economists. Some fan favorites will see prices surge as much as 12% compared to last year, while others will experience significant price drops.

Michael Swanson, Wells Fargo Chief Agricultural Economist, stated in a recent report that a menu for 10 people is estimated to cost just over $139, remaining relatively stable with the 2024 price which was only about 10 cents higher. 'Consumers are faced with the new challenge of becoming ‘food fluent’ given ongoing price fluctuation,' the report highlights. The reason for this seesaw effect lies in the varying supply chains of different food categories. Some categories, like field vegetables, can increase supply more rapidly, while others, such as avocados, take years to expand production. Additionally, Swanson points to strong consumer demand for certain items as a driver of price increases.Swanson explained to FOX Business that unlike the past four years, where prices predominantly saw significant increases, this year presents a mixed bag. 'There are both food prices that are falling as well as rising,' he stated. 'The option the last couple of years were whether they went up a lot or a little.' He stressed that there are 'important categories that are noticeably lower than last year,' citing examples like frozen pizza, where prices have declined year-over-year. 'That speaks to a competitive supply taking advantage of good harvests for crops,' Swanson said. This fluctuating pricing landscape offers consumers opportunities to save money. While high demand has driven up costs for items like avocados and chicken wings, Swanson suggests exploring alternative options like shrimp tacos, which benefit from lower prices compared to last year. If cost-saving is a priority, Swanson recommends utilizing the Wells Fargo Agri-Food Institute's pricing chart, which identifies items to avoid. The chart reveals that certain vegetables like broccoli have seen prices fall 7.2% compared to 2024, while cherry tomatoes have increased by 11.9%. Avocado prices have risen by 11.5% year-over-year, but making guacamole from scratch remains more cost-effective despite the avocado price increase. Chicken wing prices have jumped 7.2%, but whole frozen shrimp have dipped 4% compared to last year.Snack prices are generally down, with tortilla and potato chips experiencing a decrease. The overall cost of chips and guacamole dip is only two cents higher than in 2024. Beverage prices have increased by 2% overall, with beer and wine seeing the largest rise. Consumers seeking a more budget-friendly option are advised to choose two-liter bottles of soda over 12-ounce cans.
