The so-called 'emergency' plan to unstick the Rwanda deportations policy limps on, slowly

The Prime Minister and his team spent the last few days urging the Lords to work with the Government – not against it –But, despite scraping together as much support from Tory peers as seemingly possible, the eventual turnout was underwhelming for the Conservatives and they suffered a flurry of defeats. But the size and number of defeats indicates there is still a way to go for Rishi Sunak to get his legislation over the line and the first flights off the ground.

Peers backing the amendments have insisted they are not trying to block the bill and the expectation is that it will eventually pass. But the Lords are digging their heels in over issues around Rwanda being a safe country and ensuring international law is not ignored. Regardless of tonight’s defeat, No10 has remained confident throughout that it will be able to stick to its original timetable even if the legislation is now unlikely to be passed before Easter.
