The Government is considering a compromise to bring health strikes to an end - but if it dithers, its authority could be shot

Late in 2022, Health Secretary, Steve Barclay, proposed a compromise: NHS workers could get a one-off payment to help with the cost of living for this year, before a salary rise as usual to come in early in the next fiscal year.

This was rejected by the Prime Minister and the Chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, who were understood to believe that it would undermine their firm stance – that the question of pay for this year must not be reopened..

There is a serious danger here for the Government. In the Boris Johnson years, ministers repeatedly sought to look tough by holding to a firm policy line; only to back down days or weeks later, long after doing so could have been spun as a sign of welcome flexibility.
