In a speech in Kent, the Prime Minister will give an update on the progress made in the six months since he introduced the Illegal Migration Bill under his plans to “stop the boats”.
The Government’s controversial Illegal Migration Bill – which will effectively ban people arriving in the UK on small boats from claiming asylum here – is passing through the House of Lords. The legislation has been branded as “morally unacceptable” by the Archbishop of Canterbury, and heavily criticised by opposition MPs, charities and human rights groups.
Last week, at a meeting of European Political Community leaders in Moldova, Mr Sunak said he was “putting tackling illegal migration top of the international agenda,” and initiated talks with the host country on a deal to return migrants who arrive in the UK by irregular means.
