ASU has emerged as one of the more improved teams in the Pac-12, but is it enough to help the Sun Devils challenge the powers in the conference.
The Arizona State Sun Devils had two major issues a year ago — rebounding and three-point shooting. Head coach Bobby Hurley addressed the rebounding issue in the offseason and he thought the additions made would also address the long distance issues as well.
It is No. 10 UCLA and surprising Utah atop the conference at 4-0, with USC at 3-1. Arizona, Arizona State and Oregon are all at 2-1 ASU ranks 308th out of 352 Division I teams in three-point percentage, making 101 of 331 tries . In those two losses ASU fared even worse, sinking only 8 of 53 attempts. "I've been in games like that as a player and I know how it feels. Just how much they want it, how badly they want to win,"Hurley said."Sometimes you can't relax and make an open shot. We had guys that have taken them and made them throughout the course of the season, gotten us where we are. Just didn't go in from a distance this time. Some weren't great. I think we were chasing and you know, your first response is to go for 3, not for 2.
Both foes loom as formidable ones despite their records. Washington State, coached by Kyle Smith, led UCLA for the entire game last week before falling 67-66 on a layup by Adam Bona with 19 seconds left. The Cougars had the ball last, but a 3-point try by D.J. Rodman was off the mark.
