A new fire extinguisher specialist position has been created by Summit Fire & EMS in Colorado to address the issue of businesses not servicing their extinguishers. This initiative aims to improve fire safety and responsible recycling of outdated extinguishers.

Fire inspectors in Summit County, Colorado, discovered that many businesses were not servicing their fire extinguishers. Instead of getting them recharged, they would buy new ones each year and keep the old ones. Summit Fire & EMS recognized this service gap and created a new position to address it. Meghan Layfield, a fire inspector, spearheaded the program after noticing the issue. She observed that fire extinguishers were often not serviced within the required 12-month timeframe.

This led to high service costs as technicians had to commute from distant areas. Summit Fire & EMS found the perfect candidate in Jessy Dorton, who has a lifelong passion for fire extinguishers. Layfield learned about Dorton's expertise and offered him the fire extinguisher specialist role. Dorton has been a valuable asset to the team, bringing his knowledge and enthusiasm to the job
