Summit County is hoping to hire more police officers to protect children during school hours.

Some Utah school workers will be given extra police training to become “ school guardians ,” able to spring into action in case of an emergency, like a school shooting. To do this, they’re likely going to raise taxes — which has some county residents upset — but, county officials said they don’t want to use school guardians to keep kids safe while in class.

Hiring more school officers isn’t the only reason the county is looking to increase taxes. Summit County Manager Shayne Scott said they have increased mental health needs and higher defense costs at the county attorney’s office. “We already do have some school resource officers. The mandate to have them in all of our schools is a challenge we’re trying to face,” Scott said.

However, Scott said the sheriff’s office doesn’t want to do that. KUTV asked Scott if the county can save money and not raise taxes by encouraging school guardians, why not choose that option?
