Between droughts, tornadoes, floods and wildfire smoke, Northeast Ohio has had quite a summer
and animals. Thanks to lower-than-normal rain levels, more than 7 million people in Ohio were affected at one time.
But the drought decreased as summer storms - especially in July and August - started bringing in heavy rain. However, at the same time, the rest of the Midwest slid into a severe drought, at one point encompassing more than 80% of the region.. Yet this week, 11% of Ohio was still rated abnormally dry, specifically in western and southern counties.
Wilson says that the crops in Ohio fared better than expected thanks to harvesting earlier than usual. But drought has left the soil dry, which may be a problem for next year.
With it came smoke-filled streets, a persisting acrid odor, and, for some, a return of masks each time the Air Quality Index rose to unhealthy levels in the city. said that while the data on the long-term effects of wildfire smoke on human health is unknown, fine particulate matter in the air can cause irritation to the lungs and cause strokes, asthma flare-ups and heart disease.
