The late Pedro Gomez, former Arizona Republic and ESPN reporter, loved journalism and mentoring. It's fitting there will be a internship in his name.
Pedro Gomez never had to reassure anyone that he loved his job. His exuberance and smile were on display every time he walked into a ballpark or a press box.
Nick Piecoro, The Republic’s Diamondbacks beat writer, found this out years ago when he was a student at Ironwood High School. Piecoro was writing a story about what being a sportswriter was like and thought he'd call Pedro. He left a voice message, and Pedro, who was working at The Republic at the time, promptly called back.“One thing he said about the job was, ‘I don’t consider this going to work, this is my dream. I’m not like, ‘Oh, shoot I have to cover baseball today.
It’s a fitting tribute to Pedro, who knew his way around ASU’s Cronkite headquarters like a member of the faculty.
