Alaska Sen. Dan Sullivan joined calls Wednesday for an investigation into federal immigration tactics in Minneapolis, where a Border Patrol agent fatally shot a man Saturday.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Alaska Sen. Dan Sullivan joined calls Wednesday for an investigation into federal immigration tactics in Minneapolis , where a Border Patrol agent fatally shot a man Saturday., a 37-year-old intensive care nurse at a VA hospital, over the weekend.
The shooting reignited protests against immigration crackdowns in several cities across the country, It has also intensified scrutiny of federal immigration enforcement operations in Minneapolis involving both ICE and Border Patrol agents. Several legislators have been asking for an investigation, including Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, who has called for the resignation of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.on Sunday, saying in part that he “believes we should gather all the facts and investigate the incident before drawing conclusions.” His Wednesday statement went further, acknowledging the need for tactical changes while defending law enforcement broadly. “The loss of civilian life in Minneapolis is a tragedy, and all sides need to focus on de-escalation and lower the temperature so the violence in Minneapolis dissipates. This does appear to be happening,” Sullivan wrote. A full investigation, Sullivan said, would involve both parties and would “ensure accountability, restore public trust, and prevent further confrontation resulting in the loss of life.” Sullivan emphasized that he is a strong supporter of law enforcement and still praises efforts to secure the border and remove illegal immigrants with criminal records. “At the same time, ICE must learn from the tragic, violent confrontations with protesters in recent weeks and adjust its tactics and procedures to prevent future loss of civilian life when carrying out these missions,” Sullivan said. ”Minnesota’s state and local officials also have a responsibility to cooperate with federal law enforcement on their legitimate goals and not obstruct them."Trump administration announces 15 new drugs for Medicare price negotiation programSon of Toksook Bay Tribal judge arrested after alleged Tribal Officer kidnapping at gunpoint
