The processes that transport gold from deep within Earth's mantle to the surface rely on sulfur that bubbles up beneath active volcanoes. Two new studies have agreed that certain forms of sulfur create molecular bonds with gold, allowing it to rise. One team, led by Deng-Yang He of the China University of Geosciences, found that trisulfur is key. Another team, led by Stefan Farsang and Zoltán Zajacz of the University of Geneva, identified bisulfide as the crucial player.
Both sets of findings are intriguing and warrant further investigation. Understanding how gold deposits form can help us better utilize this valuable resource. Gold in these deposits originates deep below Earth's surface, in the mantle. Typically, it would remain trapped there due to its density, but it gets incorporated into magmas that rise through volcanic activity to the surface, where gold deposits are formed.
